How to differentiate between UI and UX

They say User Interface is like a Joke, if you have to explain it, it’s not that good. If UI is a joke, is UX the humour, we wonder! Is UI just an eye candy or is there more to it? Is UX the same as UI?

UI and UX build relationship between product and people. Interface and experience has the power to turn visitors to customers in the long run. Often we find ourselves in a fix, unable to differentiate between UI and UX. Both UI and UX are used interchangeably or incorrectly too. 

A UI enables users to interact with product and makes it accessible like screens, pages, buttons and icons. On the other hand UX refers to overall experience of product and reason why customer chose over product over others.  

What comes first UI or UX? Can User experience exist without user interface?  Are they inter- dependent? How both UI and UX help us gain in this competitive environment?

Our mentor Jay Dutta illustrates helps founders differentiate between UI and UX. He is an alumnus of NID, worked as a UX designer for giants like Flipkart, Adobe and MakeMyTrip. Additionally, he co-founded UX design start-up and curator for various UI related conferences.
